Inauguration Speech by Angela Bretas at AIP - Academia Internacional Poetrix

"To be great is to embrace a great cause."
(William Shakespeare)

When I opened my e-mail box, there was an invitation from the master creator of Poetrix, from Bahia, Goulart Gomes, to join the Poetrix International Academy, occupying chair number 4. I was honored and here I am to embrace, together with fellow poetrixts, this great cause. Invitation accepted, it was up to me to choose the patron. I received several literary advice throughout my life when reading different authors and styles, but the one who undoubtedly led me to think fast when expressing myself, the one who made me question or daydream was undoubtedly William Sheakespeare. He wrote:

"The men of few words are the best."
(from Play: Henrique VI)

"To be
or not be
That is the question ! “

(From the monologue in Hamlet)

According to critics, “To be or not to be” went beyond its context and became a broad existential question. "To be or not to be" is about acting, taking action and positioning yourself or not in the face of events. William Shakespeare an immortal writer of the English language, master of dramaturgy and universal literature. His literary style solidified into poetry, romance, drama, comedy and tragedy. Immortalized are his writings, he had a form of 'poetrix' like few others, and it was with reverence for him that I chose him as a patron.

I can not forget that I grew up a teenager in love with the drama of Romeo and Juliet, then I got into reading his love sonnets, arriving in a distant country I was enchanted reading the socio-cultural plots of Julius Caesar and I questioned myself about life and death reading Hamlet . A little more than two decades ago I got to know Poetrix through the Yahoo Group and identified myself with it, at the time writing in weekly columns for Brazilian immigrants in the USA and in my columns, in addition to journalistic material, I would add poetry as a way to keep the love of letters in the hearts and minds of readers thirsty for Brazilian literature abroad. As the space was small, a page, in a printed newspaper, I started writing small poems at the bottom of the columns. Stubborn as I was, I insisted with the publisher that poetry had to be in my columns, and so it was, the columns had literature, and consequently Poetrix, as the flagship, for more than two decades. My love story with Poetrix was unexpected.

Researching how to improve myself, writing less and communicating more. I can't remember exactly how , I think by reading a text by Aníbal Beça that I ended up in the MIP group. It was an era of constant learning, together with most of the academics who are here, it is unfair to mention one or the other name because we were a circle of idealists, thinkers, dreamers and poets .... we threw our literary seeds every morning in the group as if they were bear fruit until the afternoon ... and they did! Inspiration was contagious and Poetrix popped up like a kid he is, little one, making the night owls party. Sleepless nights reading and writing Poetrix were showered with laughter, friendships, discoveries and literary knowledge. It was the turn of a new millennium and the Poetrix story was just crawling.

From then on, I started to incorporate Poetrix in my literary works, in the second edition of the American Dream I opened each new chapter with a Poetrix, in the anthologies I participated in and coordinated, in solo books, on the internet pages, my weekly columns, in contests literary and poetry soirees there they were as if to tell me “ we are small but we deserve our space.” I have always liked minimalism because I think that saying a lot with little is the way ... and this is the path I intend to take as part of this Academic team .

I’m eternally grateful to register and embrace this great cause.
